How Raksha Bandhan is celebrated in India In India, Raksha Bandhan has great significance and is celebrated with a lot of spirit. Sisters tie the sacred thread of Rakhi India on the brother's right hand, exchange Rakhi gifts and mouth watering sweets and pray to God for the protection of their brother. In return, the brother promises that he will protect the sister against all evils. People wear new clothes on this day and go to temple. On the day of Rakhi the brothers usually prefer to go for traditional outfits like Kurta-Payjamas, Pathan Suits, Kurta-Jeans etc. The sisters usually wear designer Indian sarees with little or heavy carving. Some sisters also go for Salwar-Kameez, Chudidaar-Kurta, Saree, Lehengas, Parellels-Short Kurtas or other apparels.
History of Raksha Bandhan
This Hindu festival have multiple stories about its origin. Some of the most popular stories are mentioned below :
Queen Karnawati and Mugul Emperor Humayun :- The incidence of Rani Karnavati and Emperor Humayun is the most significant evidence in the history. During the battle between Mughal Empire and Rajputs, the widow of Rajput King Rani Karnavati, realized that the Sultan of Gujarat was planning to attact Chittor. Since she could not find any way to save her people, she send a Rakhi thread to Humayun. After understanding the sacred meaning of Rakhi, Humayun accepted Rani Karnavati as a sister and ordered his forces to protect her and her people.
Lord Indra and Damon king vritra:- According to Hindu mythology, the heaven is ruled by Indra who had tough fight with demons who where trying to take over heaven. Demons had tried many ways to defeat Indra. In one of those fight Indra has lost to vritra the demon king. With this indra's guru brihaspathi advised Indra's wife to tie a scarified thread on her husband's hand after praying to God. Indra has won the war with the power of this thread.
Lord Krishna and Draupathi:- To protect the good people, Lord Krishna killed the evil King Shishupal. In the war, Krishna was hurt and left with bleeding finger. Draupathi seeing this, had torn a strip of cloth from her sari and tied around his wrist to stop the bleeding. Realizing her affections and concern, Lord Krishna declared himself bounded by her sisterly love and promised her to repay this debt. Many years later, when the pandavas lost Draupathi in the game of dice and Kauravas were removing her saari, Krishna helped her divinely elongating the saari so that they could not remove it.
King Bali and Goddess Lakshmi:- The deep devotion of Mahabali has compelled lord Vishnu to take the task of protecting Bali's kingdom leaving his normal place in Vikundam. Goddess lakshmi has became sad because of this as she wanted lord Vishnu along with her. So she went to Bali and discussed the whole scenario with him. She tied Rakhi on his wrist. The king was touched by her and Lord Vishnu's good will and affection towards him. Bali requested Lord Vishnu to accompany her to vaikuntam. It is said that since that day it has become a tradition to invite sisters on sravan pournima to tie sacred thread of Rakhi.
Yama and Sister Yamuna:- Sister of yama (the god of death), Yamuna, bestowed immortality by tying a rakhi on Lord Yama's wrist. Full of sisterly affection and love, Yama declared that whosoever gets this sacred thread, will be blessed.
